Why does my clock stops when laptop goes into standby mode?

Can an employer legally withhold pay if I forget to clock in?

At my most recent staff meeting the general manager of the restaurant where I work has said that she will not pay employees for hours they work if they forget to clock in. I am fairly sure this is illegal.

Today I forgot to clock in for my shift and I would like to know whether or not my employer can actually legally withhold pay.

Some kind of official document to refer to would be beneficial.
